How does it work?
What is Scalp Pigmentation (SMP)?
Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a safe and effective solution for all forms of hair loss. It is a "Cosmetic Tattoo" sometimes also known as "Hair Simulation Tattoo" (HST) or a "Medical Tattoo’.
Using nano needles and advanced pigmentation techniques, Melissa places thousands of tiny multi-dimensional dots of pigment (color) into the scalp that simulate follicles, each replacing a missing hair, which helps your hair look thicker.
Does it hurt?
Generally clients are surprised at how little discomfort they experience during a scalp pigmentation procedure. On average clients rate the discomfort level around 1-3 on a scale of 1 being the least painful and 10 being unbearable. While it is technically a tattoo, the needles Melissa uses for scalp pigmentation are specialty nano needles that are smaller and thinner than traditional "tattoo needles" and fortunately for scalp pigmentation clients, the scalp tends to be a less sensitive area than others when it comes to introducing needles to skin.
Who is it for?
Is Scalp Pigmentation (SMP) right for me?
Melissa specializes in womens hair loss and has worked to create an environment welcoming to both women and men. The great majority of Scalp Micropigmentation treatments are marketed toward men in a tattoo parlor setting so Melissa has taken great care to create a serene treatment space that feels more like a medi spa than a typical SMP Tattoo Shop. This has been found to be appealing not only to women, but to many men as well because not everyone feels at home in a tattoo shop.
SMP is for everyone, not just for balding men. It's for women who have struggled with thinning areas, moms who want to swim with their kids and not worry about hair fibers and anyone who wants to feel confident wearing different hair styles they may have otherwise shied away from because of patchy spots.
Scalp Pigmentation disguises the areas that are obviously thinning by providing the illusion of a full head of hair.
There is no downtime, no scarring, or invasive surgery required which makes this a great treatment option for anyone experiencing hair loss.
As with all cosmetic procedures, some restrictions do apply.
How long does it last?
What is the longevity & maintenance of Scalp Pigmentation (SMP)?
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a semi-permanent cosmetic tattoo - it usually lasts 3-5 years and slowly fades away over time. Because everyone's biochemistry is different, everyone experiences fading differently and at different rates of time.
Things that affect the longevity of scalp pigmentation include but are not limited to: UV exposure, smoking, oily skin, lifestyle, health conditions.
It is important to follow aftercare advice and use the recommended products for sun protection.
How much does it cost?
The cost of Scalp Pigmentation in Los Angeles varies widely, with the range for the FULL scalp typically being $3,500 - $6,500 depending on severity of loss & desired density. Fees are considerably less for those who do not require full scalp service and wish to treat smaller areas like the temples, crown only, individual patches of loss, areas with scarring.
Scalp pigmentation usually requires 2-4 sessions to achieve desired density.
Melissa's fees start at $450/session for a small area and go up to $1,100/session for the full scalp.
Fees determined at consultation prior to booking.
Will it make my hair grow?
Will Scalp Pigmentation (SMP) affect my natural hair growth?
Scalp Pigmentation won't affect your natural hair growth. It won't make your hair grow back and it will not cause it to fall out. While SMP is NOT a hair GROWTH treatment, it does involve the use of tiny needles and there have been some promising studies regarding microneedling and hair growth stimulation, however, your mileage may vary and Melissa makes no promises that SMP will stimulate any hair growth.
